This poem was written by Russian poet, Konstantin Simonov, who was a soldier in the Russian Army during World War II. I heard the poem while watching the World War II documentary, “World at War” and I heard the poem recited by the narrator and actor, Laurence Olivier. It is an incredibly sad and powerful poem, with a great uplifting ending. It feels like the poet has really captured what it must be like for the soldier who is so far from home and away from those he loves. I brought the poem to the Becca and Brian with some rough ideas of an arrangement in January 2020. They jumped in and within an afternoon, they were able to shape the song into what it wound up being on the record. Roscoe did a great job producing this song, as well as playing the cajon, standup bass and strings.
