This song was based on a true story that I experienced first-hand, as a very young professional, while working in the deep South. (The song says “Ohio”, but that rhymed better than “Mississippi” in the song.) It was a horrible situation to be in and was shocking to witness. I couldn’t believe this was being said in modern times. I guess I was naïve to the obvious racism that existed and still exists in the world today.
