about

I once heard an Irish National friend refer to himself and his fellow Irishmen as "the blacks of Europe". (This was also a line from the movie The Commitments.) This metaphorical comparison between two very obvious disparate groups is striking. Yet for an Irishman to make that statement shows how the Irish feel they have been treated historically. Folklore has it that during the 1800's, when the downtrodden Irish immigrants were pouring into the States, they were looked down upon by the existing early settlers/colonialists/Americans. Whether it was because they were catholics or Irish is hard to tell.

lyrics

The Irish need not apply
The Irish need not apply
They were the blacks of Europe
Looking for hope
The Irish need not apply

Famine drove them from their homes
They came to The States in droves
Some didn’t like their beliefs
Now the Irish need not apply

Chorus

Their tight-knit community
Provided them with unity
Their votes gave them power to give them a say
Now the Irish, they can apply

Solo
